The Tree of Life has five roots through which it gives life to the whole world. The world of Biomutant is struck by a natural disaster as poisonous oil comes up from beneath the surface and pollutes the Tree of Life.
Biomutant has branching storylines where decisions made by the player will decide how the story will continue. A Storyteller tells the events of what happens during the course of the gameplay. Player can choose to eliminate those tribes or combine and unite the tribes. There are also six tribes split from their original location.

You choose the gender, body shape and thickness, fangs, fur and fur pattern, length, and other attributes of your character, and those choices affect stats for the character. Other characters can be found who will give you services and items such as modifying your Automaton. You control a creature similar to a raccoon in a world with animals that are mutated. The game is a third person action role-playing game in an open world environment.
